What is OCD?

OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and comprises of a distressing cycle of unwanted thoughts, feelings, or images and use of compulsions to reduce the emotional distress. The compulsions feel out of control to the person experiencing OCD and often the obsessions feel impossible to change.

What does treatment look like?

The gold standard of treatment of OCD is Exposure Response Prevention (ERP). This modality works by slowly building tolerance to fears and obsessions by practicing them in increments. OCD work is not making the thoughts go away or changing the world around us. It’s about learning to tolerate what has so far been too much or too scary - one step at a time and at an individualized pace.
